SUMMARY CONCLUSION:
The Bible appears to be associating yielding or giving up the ghost with the death of the body of Christ. This seems to relate to what happened both at the cross as well as the death of the church (body of Christ): the wicked die unto damnation and are not gathered or they are said to gather each other. The elect also give up the ghost when the body dies except they are gathered unto Christ.
